PlayStation 2 turns nine
By Brendan Sinclair
GameSpot Posted Oct 28, 2009 1:15 pm PT

Sony says once-dominant workhorse "shows no signs of slowing down" as it celebrates milestone, touts hardware's catalog of 10,000 games and 140 million installed base.

Nine years ago this week, Sony launched the PlayStation 2 in the US, sporting a $299 price tag and a launch-day library of more than two dozen games, including hits like Madden NFL 2001 and Tekken Tag Tournament.

The PS2 Slim only hit the $99 price point earlier this year.
The gaming giant marked the anniversary today with a stat dump celebrating the long-term success of the PS2. According to Sony Computer Entertainment America, the console has a worldwide installed base of nearly 140 million, with a library approaching 10,000 games having sold more than 500 million copies combined.

Although Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's original Xbox ceased production years ago, Sony today declared that the PS2 "shows no signs of slowing down" at the tail end of its 10-year life span. However, with the introduction of the current generation of consoles, its sales have slowed in recent years. According to the NPD Group, the PS2 sold 146,000 last month, down from 173,500 in September 2008 and 215,000 in September of 2007.

The slimline PS2, introduced in 2004, remains available on store shelves for a retail price of $99. The system finally reached the double-digit price point April 1, more than eight years into its life span and nearly five years after the move was first rumored. The low price has helped convince publishers to continue developing for the platform, with DJ Hero and MotorStorm Arctic Edge among recent PS2 releases.

hmm, I think I've had my PS2 for about 7 years. It might even be 8 but I don't think I had one just a year after launch. I really can't remember. It is still quite a good system all these years later with a really solid catalog of games. I remember the first time I saw a PS2, at my neighbours place. He fired up Gran Turismo 3 and the opening video looked soooo real to me. That was the reason I had to have a PS2. It's crazy to think how expensive I thought it was at $300, and now the PS3 debuted over double that price, and the 360 was over $500 IIRC.

I only very briefly played Metal Gear Solid on a friend's console. That might've been on a PS1 actually if there was one, I can't remember.

I wasted many hours with San Andreas - and got it for free! My room mate at the time wanted to try it out so went out and bought it when it was brand new for my PS2 - and when he moved out, I kept it :)

Metal Gear Solid 2 blew me away when I first played it.

Metal gear solid 3 made camouflage and stealth and even better integral part of the game.

This one boss fight took me 2 hours. (The End, a 100 year old sniper) You fight this guy across 3 jungle maps and he is VERY hard to find in most cases. You have to use all of your tools and tracking abilities like looking for sunlight reflection from his sniper rifle scope, any birds that fly away from his movements, use audio amplifier to listen for breathing or snoring (he sometimes fall asleep).

It is an insanely intense boss fight even though it's very low key. But believe me... after tracking this guy for an hour and a half, the last thing you wanna do is die and have to start over.

So 2 hours is actually one playthrough just for this fight.. no diying, no continue.

My eyes were bloodshot to hell afterwards and my heart was pumping like crazy, lol.

Cauxse as much as you are looking for him, you have to remain unseen and unheard or else he'll fire at you or change locations.

It would happen that I would spot him across the map and it would take 10 minutes just to get to him. If I screwed up and he heard me coming... he was gone! lol

Well if you don't have the patience, all you need to do is go into your PS2 settings and set the clock/date forward by 2 weeks. Load up the game again and The end will have died of old age.

Technically this works too if you just get to that stage, shut the game off and only come back to it 2 weeks later. he will be dead, lol.

The Metal gear games have always had these sort of console interactions.

In the first Metal Gear Solid game when you fought Psycho Mantis (A telepath boss), you couldn't hit him with any of your guns because he knew what you were doing (controller input recognition). So what you had to do was unplug your controller from port 1 and plug it into port 2. Then he couldn't "read your mind" anymore.
